Rep. Harrell’s bill removes fees from property tax bills

Representative Harrell introduces truth in taxation measure

State Representative Brett Harrell (R-Snellville) today introduced legislation (HB 291) requiring that property tax bills include property taxes and only property taxes.

Rep. Harrell says, “Too often citizens across Georgia are experiencing increasing property tax bills, increased monthly mortgage payments, and in some cases liens against their property resulting from the addition of nontax fees added to property tax bills. The type and number of fees continues to increase and may include street lights, speed humps, storm water, and sanitation.”

Representative Harrell’s bill, with 56 co-signers, simply says “No property tax bill issued by the tax commissioner… shall include any nontax related fees or assessments…”

In addition to the issues previously mentioned, the IRS has indicated that these nontax fees are not tax deductible for income tax purposes; therefore, the inclusion of these nontax fees on property tax bills likely increases the opportunity for filing erroneous income tax returns.

Speaker Ralston assigned the bill to the Ways and Means Committee.
